Glasgow primary school leads way in financial education
Riverside Primary School in Govan has become the first Glasgow school to gain Accredited Centre status for the DebtAware Money Management Programme.
A plaque was presented to the whole school during assembly by Brian Souter, Education Manager at DebtAware and the school will also be able to use the accredited status logo on their website.
Brian said;
“Riverside Primary have been involved in the DebtAware Programme for two years and were the first Glasgow school to introduce the programme, which is delivered to their Primary 6 and Primary 7 children.
“Since they joined there are now 11 Glasgow Primary Schools undertaking the programme and a number have joined due to the ambassadorial work of Riverside.
“Over the last two years over 150 children in the school will have received the 6 modules of work and 30 children will have been trained as Money Mentors.
“They have done fantastically well to gain the accreditation.”
Mrs Parker, Riverside Deputy Head, said of the award;
“Working in Govan for almost 12 years has made me realise that many families struggle financially and are in some form of debt.
“My vision for the children and the school was to create a whole school programme for financial education and Debt Aware had the whole package. The programme has allowed children to have basic knowledge about finances and an awareness of the importance of planning for the future. I love the leadership opportunities offered to the pupils in the form of becoming a Money Mentor.”
Money Mentor Corey McCoag P7 added;
“As a new Money Mentor I was nervous about presenting at first, but practising it has helped my confidence. The lessons have made me more money aware and know loads more about budgeting, debt and loans.”
